Love Kewpie Mayonnaise? Can’t buy it? You want a NO MSG Version? Here’s the Solution!
I know…the first time you tried the sweet goodness of Japanese Kewpie mayonnaise, you got shocked and fell in love. I also know…there are some issues with it. It’s not easy to get if you live outside of Japan, unless you live near a Japanese grocery store. Or perhaps you don’t like the fact that it contains MSG. Yep! I’m with you my friend.
However, here is an easy solution! You can simply purchase regular mayonnaise at your local grocery store. For example, I have purchased this one in the past:
Organic Mayonnaise
Simple Truth is a Kroger/Ralphs brand that you could purchase.
You can use mayonnaise like this, to create your own homemade version of Japanese Kewpie-style mayonnaise! Does that sound good?
You only need a few ingredients to make this amazing tasting mayonnaise. You will need regular off-the-shelf mayonnaise, salt, rice vinegar, and this secret ingredient:
This is Dashi made with Kelp seaweed with NO Additives and NO MSG. I regularly use this brand.
If you can’t find the above Dashi, there are other products which work equally well. I recommend the following two:
This is a Konbu (kelp) and Katsuo (Bonito) Dashi. I would use this one if I could not get the Kayanoya no Dashi. It’s also additive and MSG free.
Now, this is my favorite Dashi powder and I always have it stocked in my pantry. I literally use it in about 80% of my Japanese dishes. It gives it that very nice Umami taste! It also has NO ADDITIVES and NO MSG. However, for this recipe, I recommend the above two.
And the final result…
